We soon found our way to a charming little country lodge called Ndundu Lodge, tucked away in the Eastern Highland mountains.

Run by a Belgian couple, with terraced gardens, huge fireplace and a distinct log cabin feel, we could well have been in the middle of Europe, with only the lodge’s name (and numerous helpers) to remind us that we were in fact still in Africa.

One of the great things about Ndundu Lodge is that the lounge is also open to the campers. With cosy couches and the morning sun streaming through the windows and later in the day, the wonderful warm fireplace, it’s a fabulous spot to get stuck into a good book.

Even the camping at Ndundu Lodge had a more civilised feel, with stone built-in fire places and garden gazebo with seating area.

At US$3 a night each we were more than happy to spend a few days here in the stunning mountain scenery, with the whole place to ourselves.

The birdlife in the region was phenomenal. The trees and shrubs were quite literally alive with hundreds upon hundreds of birds. And the orchestra they created was quite something to hear.
