Morrungulu - 1

Morrungulu will be most fondly remembered for its beautiful lush gardens and wide expanses of green grass – a most welcome change from all the sand and dust from the weeks before.

Many an hour was spent lazing about on the wonderful lawns, going for long walks on the beach and racing through a large number of the books from our small mobile library.

The tranquil, park-like gardens of Morrungulu provided an excellent resting ground (as if travellers in this country could ever be in need of more rest and relaxation) away from the traditional holiday hotspots like Ponta do Oura, Inhambane and Vilankulos.

The campsites themselves were flanked on the one side by the beach and on the other by a wetland that offered a wonderful array of diverse and colourful birdlife.

Unfortunately for us, the resort had recently experienced some terrible weather with large seas and ferocious winds. As a result the beaches were definitely looking the worse for wear by the time we arrived, strewn with debris and displaying serious signs of erosion from the abnormally high tides.

This was more than a little worrying at times with the campsites and barraccas but a few short metres from the beach.

This also meant that their dive centre was temporarily out of action so no ocean safaris for us :-(

But we were blessed with marvellous weather during our five day stay and towards the end of it the undesirable currents and high tides had subsided, leaving a stunning tropical beach behind, with coconut palms lining the dazzling white sands.

In the fine weather, Morrungulu had a distinct tropical island feel.
